Disney Graphics

Introduction

The book I am going to review today is a very special one. I presume that some of you might already have crossed it in stores or on social media, such as Instagram. It also was on Instagram where some of you asked me to review this book to get a glimpse of this unique creation.

As the title Disney Graphics – L’univers décrypté en infographie already reveals, this is a french book. But don’t let that frighten you off, since it is a very visual and graphic creation, so even having this book in your bookshelf only to look at the great artwork from time to time is well worth it.

I first saw this book on social media and was intrigued by it straight away just because of its exquisite cover page with all those striking colors and the big white Disney lettering on the dark background, that was like a magnet to me.

I couldn’t wait to open it and finally see what is inside. So let’s have a look into this little book…

The book

Author Marc Aumont is starting straight away with the success story of the Walt Disney company and the life, work and creations of Walt Disney. For sure we get to know quite some facts about the most famous mouse on this planet: Mickey. Did you know that he’s the star of 121 cartoons, 86 of them are productions of the 1930s though.

You can’t talk about the beginning of Disney’s success story without mentioning the 9 old men, right? Here we have a great double page linking every legendary Disney animator to its biggest creations, a really great and fun idea in my opinion.

Marc Aumont just showcases so much details and facts about the Walt Disney Company without ever being too in-depth (it is a small book after all)….for example Disney’s great fairy tales and legends and where and when they first appeared, how many people watched the Disney classics in theaters, the most important real life characters of every decade, Disney and TV, where to find the different Disney themeparks, the most successful Disney songs and so on. It really is a small Disney bible with a unique visual concept!

Let’s move on to the next big chapter: Disney’s heroes and most beloved characters… a fun part of the book, in which we get quite some (not really important but still fun) facts about the Disney posse: princesses, princes, heroes, kings and queens, fairys, magicians and all teir lovely friends. Again, the text is rather minimalist and superficial, which isn’t really bothering me since this book is all about the graphics. And they are amazing!

The next part is all about Disney’s cartoon stars, a very short chapter but still: you can’t have the words Disney universe in the book title and not mention Donald, Goofy and co. i guess! Again, the illustrations are very well done!

The rest of the book is focusing on the huge lineup of Disney characters, classifying them by some of their character traits: children, cars, robots, cats and dogs, villains, sea dwellers and so on. This division is really well done and shows us one more time how divers our beloved Disney universe really is.

Résumé

Disney Graphics – L’univers décrypté en infographie is a lovely little book by Marc Aumont that is absolutely unique in its nature. It is like a little Disney bible, since it broaches so many Disney related topics without being too explicit at the same time. Actually it makes me think a little bit of the Disney From A to Z series, because after reading it you will feel like “wow, I really learned some new stuff about the Walt Disney Company and all they are doing”.

Still, this book is more of a playful children’s edition of an actual Disney bible. Nonethesless, it is so much fun to look at all those beautiful visuals… that is actually the main focus of the book: showing us the vast and magical Disney univsere in a completely new graphic style that is very modern, colorful and has a popart vibe to it.

Along the way, we get a little bit of text and background information about the company, their history and productions. You shouldn’t expect too much explanation and in-depth infos though, which isn’t a bad thing. That way you will keep in mind only the really important key-facts that are here to accompany the captivating visuals.

Like I said this is a french book, but even if you do not speak (or read) french, this book is still interesting! I’ve never seen such a colorful and simple blend of Disney design in one single book. That alone makes it a lovely addition for your collection. Furthermore, it isn’t expensive at all, so you have nothing to loose! Above all that: it’s never too late to learn a new language, especially when it’s such a beautiful one as french, right 🙂
